Basel Composition Competition
About this event
Join the final concert of the Basel Composition Competition, one of the most important prizes for contemporary music worldwide. The event includes performances of nominated works, plus interviews with the composers and the prize announcement.
The third edition of the Basel Composition Competition will take place from 4 to 7 March 2021. Since its foundation in 2017, the competition has taken place every other year, and for the 2021 edition a total of seven works for symphony orchestra and five for chamber orchestra were selected from more than 260 submitted scores. Orchestral works that have not yet been performed and have not yet been awarded a prize were eligible.
The nominees for the concerts are:
Sinfonieorchester Basel, Francesc Prat (conductor)
Artur Akshelyan (ARM) – „Three Pieces for Orchestra“
Christian Bloquert (FRA) – „Le Temps Qui Se Perd Dans Ses Yeux“
Oliver Mattern (GER) – „… cum ex re …“
Eneko Vadillo (ESP) – „SCULPTEO“
-
Basel Sinfonietta, Peter Rundel (conductor)
Andrea Mattevi (ITA) – „Respiro sul lato dell'abisso“
Hiroshi Nakamura (JPN) – „Nue“
Yiqing Zhu (CHN) – „Deep Grey“
-
Kammerorchester Basel, Franck Ollu (conductor)
Fernando Garcia Marquez (ESP) – „ESPEJO DEL DOLOR“
Nicholas Gotch (UK) – „TENEBRAE“
Angel Hernández-Lovera (VEN) – „Nocturno Onírico“
Miguel Morate (ESP) – „Comme s’en va cette onde”
Hyeon Joon Sohn (KOR) – „PROSKUENEO“
The final concert will feature three to four works from the competition, and culminate in the announcement of the prize winners, chosen by a jury chaired by the Swiss composer Michael Jarrell and including the composers Usunk Chin, Beat Furrer and Andrea Scartazzini, as well as and the director of the Paul Sacher Foundation, Dr Felix Meyer.
To our great regret, the Basel Symphony Orchestra has had to withdraw its participation in the competition as a result of one of its members testing positive for covid. Therefore, if works due to be performed by the orchestra reach the final, a recording of the pieces from the general rehearsal will be played instead.
The Basel Composition Competition awards an amount of CHF 100,000 (divided among three winners), making it one of the most important prizes for the support of Contemporary Music worldwide.
Your ticket purchase will directly support the participating artists through IDAGIO’s Fair Artist Payout Model: IDAGIO pays 80% of the net revenue directly to the performers.
Stream available until April 14, 2021.
