Thomas Hampson’s World of Song: Jasmine Barnes and Leah Hawkins
Tune in with baritone Thomas Hampson and special guests every Tuesday evening for insights into some of their favorite repertoire and recordings. In this episode, Thomas is joined by composer Jasmine Barnes and soprano Leah Hawkins. Jasmine’s song “Flowers” will be performed by Leah in the Song of America: A Celebration of Black Music festival, which is part of the Hamburg International Music Festival.
Jasmine is a composer, vocalist, and award-winning educator who has been commissioned by organizations such as The Washington National Opera, Decameron Opera Coalition, and SYMPHONY NUMBER ONE (Baltimore), among many others. She is also Head of Composition at Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (Dallas, TX), where she created a composition competition for her students to compose an original piece for the acclaimed chandelier at the home of the Dallas Opera.
Leah is a recent alumna of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera. Last season, she appeared at the Met to great acclaim as the Strawberry Woman in Porgy and Bess and Masha in The Queen of Spades. This season, she appears as Desdemona in 7 DEATHS OF MARIA CALLAS at Bayerische Staatsoper, and other debuts include Greek National Opera, Portland Opera, and Tulsa Opera.
